Safety Matters

The Limestone Child Advocacy Center works in collaboration with the Limestone County School System to provide MBF Child Safety Matters, an age appropriate education curriculum on the signs of abuse and how to tell someone if you are being hurt. This material is taught at least twice a year in each classroom in Limestone County to children in grades K-12. If you are unsure if your child has participated, ask them. If so they most likely can tell you the 5 steps to child safety. Parents do receive an opt-out form prior to instruction, as we acknowledge parents may choose to teach this material elsewhere. If you would like to see the material before your child participates, please reach out to your schools guidance counselor or contact Jennifer Kassay at the LCAC.

Limestone CAC provides a full-time staff member to the school system to teach this material. We use the Child Safety Matters/ Teen Safety Matters Curriculum which is outcome based. The children who received this training had a 99% increase in awareness of what abuse is and how to protect themselves from the time of the pre to post tests.

If you are involved in another school system in Limestone County/ Athens City including private schools or home schools and would like your child to participate, please reach out to your school system and let them know. We are happy to add additional schools as available. Our goal - and state law- is that each child in public school receive this information throughout their school years.

For more information on how such programs began and the law behind it, please look up Erin’s Law for additional information. You can read the story of her abuse and how she has worked to make this mandated in each state.

This program is funded in part through grants from the Children’s Trust Fund of Alabama and a VOCA grant administered by ADECA.
